Sealants

Brushing alone is not enough, especially for those hard-to-reach areas in your mouth. Your toothbrush can’t reach the small cracks and crevices on your teeth, leaving them open to decay. Dental sealants provide extra protection to prevent cavities and keep your teeth healthy.

Dental sealants are plastic resins that bond and harden in the deep grooves of your teeth surface. This smooths out those grooves so plaque can’t build up. With sealants in place, brushing your teeth is more effective and easier.

Sealants are most commonly applied to children’s teeth once their permanent teeth have erupted as a preventive measure against tooth decay. But adults can also get sealants on healthy teeth. While it’s more common to seal permanent teeth rather than baby teeth, every patient is different, and your dentist will recommend sealants based on your individual situation.

Sealants usually last between 3-5 years. Some adults have sealants from childhood. To keep them working, you need to have your sealants checked regularly. If they come off, be sure to schedule an appointment to have them re-applied.
